Outdoor Family Photography with a Toddler & Newborn | Oxfordshire
There’s something incredibly special about photographing a family as they grow. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing a beautiful family with their newborn baby and toddler in a local park and woodland setting in Oxfordshire. It was exactly the kind of family session I love most relaxed, natural, and full of the little moments that happen when nobody is being asked to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera. With a newborn and a toddler, you never quite know what the session will bring. And honestly, that’s part of the magic.
Can You Have an Outdoor Photoshoot with a Newborn and a Toddler?
Absolutely!

In fact, being outdoors can be a wonderful option for families with young children. Toddlers don't always want to sit still, and they certainly don't always want to do what we ask them to do. Instead of trying to change that, I work with it. A woodland or park gives little ones space to walk, run, explore, collect leaves, play, and simply be themselves. Those moments often create some of the most beautiful photographs.
Rather than spending the whole session trying to get everyone looking at the camera at exactly the same time, I encourage families to interact with one another. A cuddle, a little walk, holding hands, a toddler showing you something they've found, or simply sitting together can tell a much more meaningful story.
Letting Toddlers Be Toddlers
One of the questions parents often have before a family photoshoot is:

“What if my toddler won't cooperate?”
My answer is simple: that's okay. Your toddler doesn't need to perform for the camera. During this session, there was plenty of movement and exploration. Instead of seeing that as something we needed to control, we could use it to create photographs that reflected this stage of family life. The way a toddler moves, explores, and interacts with their parents is part of who they are right now. One day those little legs will be much longer, those tiny hands will have grown, and the things that fascinated them in the woods will have been forgotten. Photographs allow you to hold onto those details.
Including Your Newborn Naturally
With a newborn, there’s no need to rush. We can take our time and follow your baby's needs. There can be cuddles, feeds, changes, sleepy moments, and pauses. Your baby doesn't have to be awake or looking at the camera for beautiful photographs to happen. Some of my favourite images are often the quieter ones—a tiny baby being held close, a parent looking down at their newborn, or a toddler gently meeting their new little sibling. These are the connections I want to preserve.
The Sibling Connection
One of the most beautiful parts of photographing a family with a new baby is seeing the relationship between siblings begin to develop.

With a toddler and newborn, that relationship is still so new. There may be gentle curiosity, a little uncertainty, excitement, cuddles, or simply a toddler wanting to carry on exploring while the baby sleeps. We don’t need to force a perfect sibling portrait. Instead, I look for those genuine interactions as they happen. Sometimes the most meaningful photograph is not the one where everyone is looking at the camera. It’s the photograph that reminds you exactly what this moment felt like.
Why Choose a Woodland or Park Location?
Outdoor family photography gives children room to move, and that can make such a difference. A woodland path, open space, or quiet park can become part of the story of your family session. The surroundings provide natural opportunities for interaction without making the photographs feel overly posed.

You might walk together, sit on the grass, explore the trees, or simply stop for a cuddle. And because we are moving around rather than staying in one place, the gallery can contain a lovely mixture of photographs—close-up portraits, wider environmental images, sibling moments, and all those little in-between interactions.
What Should You Bring to an Outdoor Family Session?
You don't need to bring everything you own! For a session with a toddler and newborn, I would recommend keeping things practical. A few useful things include:
Snacks and water for your toddler
Nappies and anything your baby normally needs
A favourite comforter or small toy
A blanket if we want somewhere comfortable to sit
Layers for changing weather
Sensible shoes for everyone
A spare outfit for your toddler, especially if we're exploring outdoors
And most importantly, bring your family exactly as you are.
You Don't Need Perfectly Behaved Children
This is something I really want parents to know before booking a family photography session. Your children don't need to behave perfectly. They don't need to sit still. They don't need to smile on command. And you don't need to know how to pose.

My role is to guide you through the session and create opportunities for natural connection while allowing your children to be themselves. My outdoor family sessions are designed to feel relaxed rather than formal, with plenty of room for movement, play, and those beautiful unexpected moments.
Capturing This Season Before It Changes
Having a toddler and a newborn is busy. There are probably days when you're running on very little sleep, wondering how you'll manage everything, and wishing you could pause time for just a moment. But this season will change. Your newborn will grow. Your toddler will become a little more independent. And the tiny details that feel so familiar now will slowly disappear. That’s why I love photographing families at this stage. Not just the smiles. Not just the posed portraits. But the connection, the chaos, the cuddles, the curiosity, and all the little moments in between. These are the photographs that tell your family's story.
