Your Baby's First Year in Photos: A Stage-by-Stage Guide for Oxfordshire Parents
when to book, what to expect, and why there's no rush at all
The first year is the fastest year you will ever live through. One day it's a sleepy newborn who fits along your forearm; somewhere between then and a cake-smash first birthday, you blink and it's gone.
Most parents I meet across Oxfordshire and every village in between, tell me the same thing afterwards: "I wish we'd planned the photos sooner." So this is the plan. A simple, stage-by-stage guide to your baby's first year, with when to book each one and what actually happens at a session. No studio pressure, no rushing, just your home, your family, and the moments as they happen

The First Two Weeks — Booked Before Baby Arrives

Those early weeks are the ones everyone warns you about: impossibly short, impossibly lovely. The classic newborn window is roughly the first two weeks, when babies are at their sleepiest and still curl up as if they're back in your arms.
Here's the part parents don't know: you don't book a date, you book around the date. Get in touch during your third trimester and I'll hold a provisional slot around your due date. Babies arrive when they choose, so we simply move the session to fit. Early, late, bang on time - the date bends around your baby, never the other way round.
Oxfordshire is about one unhurried hour in your own space. We follow the baby: feeds when needed, cuddles when wanted, breaks whenever. And because it's your home, the photos keep the details you'll actually want to remember, the cot a grandparent bought, the blanket your mum knitted, tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
02 · Three to Four Months
First Big Smiles
By three to four months, babies discover their smile: proper eye contact, tummy-time head-ups, the first proper giggles. It's a stage photographers secretly love.
If the newborn window passed you by - totally normal, life with a newborn is a lot, this is a beautiful place to start. It usually folds neatly into a relaxed family session at home, and it's almost always the moment an older sibling decides to steal the show.
03 · Six to Seven Months
The Sitting Milestone — the Golden Window
Ask any baby photographer and they'll say the same: six to seven months is the golden window. Your baby sits steadily but hasn't yet discovered crawling, which means chunky thighs, whole-hand grips on everything, and full-volume belly laughs. The NHS development milestones put sitting at around six months, and photographically it's the sweet spot between cuddly and curious.
Weather willing, this is the perfect stage to take outdoors: bluebell woods in April, golden fields in October, or your favourite Oxfordshire park on any warm day in between. Outdoor family sessions at this age are pure movement and joy. See a real one: the Patel family, Abingdon.
04 · Twelve Months
First Birthday — Cake, Mess and Joy

A first birthday is a milestone — more for you than for them, honestly. One year ago they arrived; now there's a small person pointing at balloons and negotiating with cake.
A cake smash or first-birthday session keeps it simple: balloons optional, pressure not included. Some babies dive straight in; some pat the cake once and look personally betrayed. Both make brilliant photographs, the point is marking the year: the same little person, a whole world bigger.
05 · Before It All
Technically, It Starts With the Bump

The first year actually begins before day one. A maternity session in Oxfordshire around 32–36 weeks captures the very beginning of the story and planned together, bump-then-newborn turns scattered photos into a story arc: the bump, the arrival, the first year. I've written about exactly that journey in From Bump to Baby.
The Thread
Why One Photographer for the Whole Year
Consistency is the quiet luxury of baby photography. By the second session, your baby knows my face; by the third, they smile at me. The gallery style stays the same; soft, natural, unhurried, so the whole year reads as one story rather than four disconnected shoots.
Everything works the same way as my relaxed family sessions: about 1/2 hours, a little planning help beforehand (I send a short questionnaire and styling guide), and a hand-edited online gallery afterwards. If you're juggling several milestones, ask me about combining them, I'll always tell you honestly what's worth photographing and what can wait.
Where
I Come to You — Anywhere in Oxfordshire
I'm based near Abingdon and photograph in homes and outdoors across the whole county. Your home is the studio; your favourite walk is the backdrop.
