From Bump to Baby: Maternity & Newborn Photography in Abingdon
Abingdon, Didcot, Oxford and surrounding area
Pregnancy is such a strange mix of emotions.
You can be completely in love with a baby you haven't met yet, while also feeling exhausted, uncomfortable and slightly overwhelmed by everything that is about to change.
I think that's one of the reasons I love maternity photography. I'm not just photographing a bump. I'm photographing you, before everything changes.
And then, a few weeks later, I get to meet that little person who was there all along.
That is what I love about offering a bump to baby photography experience. The two sessions become connected in a way that individual photographs can't quite capture.
Where can I book a combined maternity and newborn photoshoot in Abingdon?
If you're looking for a combined maternity and newborn photoshoot in Abingdon, I offer both as part of a relaxed bump to baby experience through RM Fotografia.

I don't see these as two completely separate photoshoots.
For me, the maternity session is about documenting the woman who is about to become a mum, while the newborn session is about meeting her again after everything has changed.
The maternity session can take place at home or outdoors, depending on what feels right for you. Your newborn session takes place at home, where you can relax and where your baby is already comfortable.
I don't want either session to feel like another thing you have to organise perfectly.
I want you to be able to enjoy it.
Why I think maternity photographs are worth having
I know that not every woman feels particularly photogenic during pregnancy.
Your body is changing constantly, you might be tired, swollen or simply not feel like yourself. I've spoken to mums who have said, “I really don't like having my photograph taken.”
And I completely understand that.
But when I photograph maternity sessions, I'm not looking for a perfect pregnancy body or trying to create something overly posed.
I'm interested in the relationship you already have with your baby.
The way your hand naturally rests on your bump. The way you look at your partner. The little things you do without even thinking about them.
Years from now, you may look back at those photographs and remember how you felt much more clearly than you expected.
And one day, your child will be able to see you before you ever met them.
I think that's pretty special.
What happens when your baby arrives?
Newborn life is rarely as calm and organised as we imagine it will be.
There are feeds, nappy changes, very little sleep, lots of cuddles and that strange feeling of learning an entirely new person while you're also learning a new version of yourself.
So the last thing I want is for your newborn photography session to add pressure.
My newborn sessions are intentionally relaxed. We work around your baby rather than expecting your baby to work around the photographs.
If they need feeding, we stop.
If they need a cuddle, they get one.
If they don't want to sleep, that's okay too.
Some of my favourite newborn photographs have come from exactly those situations that weren't planned.

When is the best time for newborn photoshoots in Abingdon?
If you are hoping for those very sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs, I generally recommend having your session within the first 14 days after your baby is born.
But I don't believe there is one magical day when newborn photography has to happen.
Every baby is different.
Some babies are very sleepy. Others are wide awake and want to know what's going on.
I'm much more interested in photographing your baby as they actually are than trying to make them fit a particular idea of what a newborn session should look like.
That's also why I prefer photographing newborns at home.
You don't have to pack half the house into the car, get everyone dressed and drive somewhere unfamiliar. You can feed your baby in your own chair, make yourself a cup of tea and take things at your own pace.
And your home becomes part of the photographs too.
The sofa where you spent those endless night feeds.
The little room you prepared while you were pregnant.
The blanket that seemed enormous before your baby arrived.
Those details might not seem important now, but they become part of your family's history.
Why I love photographing the same family before and after birth
This is probably my favourite part of a bump to baby session.
I get to photograph you when you're still waiting.
Then I get to photograph you holding the baby you've been waiting for.
Sometimes there are little visual connections between the two sessions that you wouldn't necessarily notice at first.
The same hands.
The same home.
The same person standing in front of my camera, but somehow completely changed.
And when you put the maternity and newborn photographs together, you can actually see the transition.
Not just from pregnancy to parenthood, but from imagining your baby to knowing them.
How early should you book a bump to baby session?
If you know you'd like maternity and newborn photographs, I'd recommend getting in touch while you're pregnant.
We can talk about what you'd like, choose a time for your maternity session and make a provisional plan for your newborn photographs around your due date.
Of course, babies have absolutely no interest in our plans!
So once your baby arrives, we'll work out the actual newborn date together.
And if your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked anything, don't assume you've missed your chance. Just get in touch and we'll see what we can do.
Choosing a newborn photographer
There are plenty of talented newborn photographers in Abingdon, Oxfordshire and across the UK, so I don't think there is one photographer who is simply “the best”.
The right photographer is the one whose photographs make you feel something and whose approach feels comfortable for you.
Look beyond the individual photographs you see on Instagram.
Look at full galleries.
Look at how they photograph parents and siblings, not just the baby.
Ask yourself whether you would feel comfortable being photographed by that person when you're tired, emotional and probably haven't had much sleep.
Because those things matter.
For me, photography has always been about connection rather than perfection. I want you to recognise yourselves in your photographs.

Your bump to baby story
When I photograph families, I'm always thinking about the photographs years from now.
Not just whether they look beautiful today, but whether they will still mean something when your children are older.
Your pregnancy photographs will remind you of who you were before you met your baby.
Your newborn photographs will take you back to those first few days when everything was new.
And together, they give you something I think is even more valuable: a record of the beginning.
If you're expecting a baby and looking for maternity and newborn photography in Abingdon or Oxfordshire, I'd love to hear from you.
We can talk about what you're looking for, what you're comfortable with and what you would like to remember about this time.
There is no need to know exactly what you want before you get in touch.
That's what I'm here for.
